It can happen to anyone, anywhere; suddenly your account balance takes a dive, or you receive a bill for a credit card you know nothing about. It's not a memory lapse, it's identity theft. All it takes is a few key pieces of information and someone can access your accounts, open new ones, apply for loans, make major purchases and more. An estimated 9 million people have their identities stolen every year, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Don't be a victim, protect your identity! Here are some tips on how you can keep your identity safe:
- Do not give out your personal information, especially your social security number, to anyone unless necessary for business or legal reasons. And only give out information if you are the one who initiated the contact. Over the phone, on the internet, or by mail anyone could contact you claiming to be someone they're not.
- Do not leave your purse or wallet unattended. Identity thieves can remove and copy card and other information and then return items without you even noticing.
- Get your credit report at least once a year; it will allow you to check for any unfamiliar inquiries made and credit accounts opened.
- Be Aware. The most important factor in preventing identity theft is you. Make sure you know how to protect yourself. This week is National Protect Your Identity Week and there are a variety of FREE events across the nation to help educate consumers. Find an event near you! Click here.
